Katy always knew she wanted to be an Engineer: from an early age she asked for technical toys and gadgets and made a point of keeping up-to-date with the latest technological advances.

Whilst studying A-Levels in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science at Greenhead College Huddersfield, she demonstrated a flair for engineering. Katy took part in Headstart, the Engineering Education Scheme and Crest Awards.

In 1998, Katy embarked on a four year apprenticeship placement with British Airways and completed her BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Aeronautical Engineering as part of the training. Here she was able to utilise her practical talents and gain firsthand experience of working on an aircraft.

In 2002, she completed her BEng (Hons) in Airport Transport Engineering with first class honours and joined Daletech Electronics Ltd as a Technical Support Engineer.

Now employed as an Electrical Engineers Assistant with Kirklees Metropolitan Council, Katy receives commissions for electrical systems for all types of buildings throughout the Council, including electrical rewires, lighting systems, security systems, fire alarm installations, emergency lighting and CCTV systems. Her work involves managing projects from the feasibility stage, through client consultation to design and tender preparation and finally supervising works on site.

At present, she is working with a local secondary school on a project to install a wind turbine. Not only engaged with the project design, Katy also explains the process to students and involves them in this sustainable energy engineering project.

Katy has just started the second year of an MSc in Advanced Engineering at Loughborough University. In her spare time she enjoys hill walking and horse riding, and is a District Explorer Scout Commissioner for the Spen Valley District.
